Opal is a gemstone made of tiny silica spheres. When light passes between them it diffracts into flashes of colour known as play-of-colour. Because every opal forms differently, no two stones are ever the same.
TYPES OF OPAL
Black, White, Crystal & Boulder
Black opal has a dark body tone that makes its colours glow. White opal has a light, milky body. Crystal opal is transparent to translucent, and boulder opal forms naturally on ironstone. Doublets and triplets combine a slice of natural opal with a backing and cap.
COLOUR & PATTERN
Reading Play-Of-Colour
Red is the rarest colour in opal, followed by orange, yellow, green, blue and violet. Patterns such as harlequin, rolling flash and pinfire add character. Brightness and body tone have a big influence on value.
